Canadian Idol auditions: Winnipeg
Metro Toronto

March 4, 2005
Sandy Garcia

When: Canadian Idol auditions in Winnipeg, the fifth stop of the 13-week cross-country audition tour in the search for Canada's next breakout vocalist, were held over three days, from March 1 to 3.

How many: During Tuesday's auditions, 411 Idol hopefuls showed up for the first round of auditions. Yesterday, 73 contestants who received blue tickets to the celebrity judge level of the singing competition were scheduled to audition in front of judges Jake Gold, Farley Flex, Sass Jordan and Zack Werner. As of 2 p.m. yesterday afternoon, six gold tickets had been awarded to contestants, advancing them to the quarter-final round, which will take place in Toronto in May.

How the auditions went: Scott Henderson, director of programming communications for CTV says: "The talent in Winnipeg has been really good. The ratio of people who received blue tickets compared to the (number) of people that auditioned is the highest out of any city we've been to yet."

Hello, again: According to Henderson, many of last season's contestants showed up at the Winnipeg auditions to give it another shot, including Barrett Peitsch, Stephanie Champagne, Cheryl Maendel and Danielle Chammartin. From Season 2, familiar faces included Tara Martel, Robin Pare and Mark Devigne.

Interesting tidbits: Dave Moffat, from the Moffats, made it to the celebrity round. His brothers - he's the middle triplet - are re-forming their band with an alt-rock vibe, but Dave wants a pop career, so he was in Winnipeg trying out. In other news, the Canadian Idol production crew has been spooked and creeped out while staying at the Fort Garry Hotel, which is said to be haunted.

A weird coincidence: Unbeknownst to each other, both the great-great-granddaughter of Louis Riel and the great-great-grandson of Riel's arresting officer turned out for auditions.
